Picture 5 Lightning Storm Over Sandbanks, 23rd June 2005

Lightening is one of natures most powerful phenomena with temperatures reaching 50,000 degrees (five times the surface temperature of the sun) and upwards of one billion volts of electricity being generated in the more energetic electrical storms.

Violent thunderstorms swept across the southern half of the country on the night of the 23rd June 2005.  Lightening strikes in their thousands were recorded, leaving 16,000 homes without power.  This photograph captures the storm at its peak above Poole Harbour and shows lightening bolts raining down on the Sandbanks Peninsula.
